Suspect dead, deputy seriously injured after shooting in Crittenden County

STURGIS, Ky. – A suspect is dead and a deputy remains hospitalized following a shooting in Crittenden County.

Authorities say the KSP Critical Incident Response Team was requested to investigate the shooting that occurred on Thursday around 5 p.m. CDT.

Troopers say a preliminary investigation found the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office and the Kentucky Department of Community Based Services responded to 2807 KY-365 in Sturgis to serve emergency guardianship paperwork.

According to authorities, gunfire was exchanged with the suspect, 60-year-old Ronnie Phillips, who was fatally wounded.

Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office deputy Rick Coyle was hit by gunfire from the suspect and was flown to a hospital, according to KSP. Troopers say he remains in critical condition at Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.

A female victim was safely removed from the residence. No other injuries were reported.

KSP was also assisted at the scene by the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, Union County Sheriff’s Office, Marion Police Department and Crittenden County EMS.

The investigation remains ongoing.
