WCPS hosts 12th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Warren County Public Schools held its 12th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at Greenwood High School on Wednesday, honoring the legendary civil rights activist.

“We do this program in order to highlight the legacy of Dr. King and allow our students to shine through that and allow them the opportunity to talk about leadership that we do in our district that aligns with his legacy as well,” recruitment coordinator Misti Logsdon says.

The evening featured students from all grades and schools in the county coming together to honor Dr. King’s legacy in unique ways.

Whether it’s through poetry or sharing how their leadership opportunities shape them, it’s all about finding something the student is comfortable in doing.

“Not every child is an artist or a singer… and so there’s multiple opportunities for them to jump in and be recognized while also honoring him for the legacy he’s given us,” Logsdon says.

Through these projects, the kids are learning about the work he’s done for civil rights and how it shapes what they do on a daily basis.

“It’s very important for them to know that there are people who led the way for us to be able to lead in the ways that they do in their buildings. They’re talking about different groups that they’re a part of where they have these leadership opportunities, and it’s just for them to know that someone in the past led to them being able to do that. It’s key in all that we do,” Logsdon says.

The one message she hopes they take away from the presentation:

“We’re not just one, that we are a team all together, and then it takes us all in order to continue this,” Logsdon says.
