FRANKLIN, Ky. – The Simpson County Animal Shelter is reminding pet owners to be ready for lower overnight temperatures this week.

According to weather chief Chris Allen, overnight lows will fall into the mid 30s here in much of southern Kentucky.

The shelter is asking owners to bring their pets inside. If this is not an option, rescuers say to provide them with straw to keep warm.

“If you own a pet, it’s your responsibility to protect them,” the shelter states.

In addition, the shelter says a dog house is not enough, and tarps can help block the wind.

Cats will also need a warm place to sleep, and drivers should be aware some could search for heat in car engines.

“We really don’t have more space for intakes due to weather,” the shelter further stated. “We will be making some hard decisions in the next week unless dogs move out. We cannot continue to leave dogs outside in cold weather. Adopters and rescues are urgently needed.”
