Feel Good Friday: Greenwood High School named top-ranked school in south central Kentucky
BOWLING GREEN, KY – A new report from U.S. News & World Report ranks Greenwood High School as one of the best high schools in Kentucky: coming in at 16th in the state, and first in south-central Kentucky.
The rankings are based on graduation rates, test scores, and college readiness. Greenwood Principal, Adam Hatcher, said the recognition reflects the combined efforts of students, teachers, and families.
“I think it’s great. It’s a time to celebrate,” Hatcher said. “What we’re celebrating is the hard work of the teachers and students. And we have great support from our families, too. I think it takes all three to be a successful school.”
Greenwood has a graduation rate of over 95%, significantly above the state average. Students also score higher than average in reading, math, and language arts. But Hatcher says the school’s strength goes beyond statistics.
“It’s just the positive culture that the students, teachers, and staff have created over the years,” Hatcher said. “This is my eighth year here, and it just seems like we get better and better every year.”
The U.S. News rankings also take into account how schools serve minority students and those from low-income families. Greenwood performs at or above the state average in these categories, which is something Hatcher credits to the school’s commitment to inclusion.
“I think the biggest key is to make everyone feel like this is their home,” Hatcher said.
Greenwood isn’t the only area school to earn recognition. Glasgow High School and South Warren High School in Bowling Green also ranked in the top 50 statewide.
