9/11 survivor visits Barren County school to share message of unity and sacrifice
BARREN COUNTY, Ky. — James Vitale, a 9/11 survivor and New York native, visited Austin Tracy Elementary School to commemorate Patriot Day and honor the lives lost during the 2001 attacks.
Vitale shared his personal experiences with students, emphasizing the importance of remembrance and resilience.
“The sounds, the smells, the people that are hurting — I will say those who have lost,” Vitale said, reflecting on the tragedy.
Principal Lee noted the significance of teaching younger generations, many of whom were born long after 9/11, about the day’s impact.
“Even parents now have no real recollection,” Lee said. “It’s important we remind kids that being a hero is about duty, sacrifice, and honor.”
The visit marked the 25th anniversary of Patriot Day and served as a call for unity and education.
“We are the United States, not the divided states,” Vitale said.
