Russell Sims Aquatic Center celebrates National Waterpark Day

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Whether it’s a massive theme park or a local community pool, waterparks have long been a summertime tradition. But did you know National Waterpark Day was only established in 2017?

Originally launched as a marketing effort, the day has since taken on deeper meaning in communities like Bowling Green — especially at places like Russell Sims Aquatic Center.

“National Waterpark Day is obviously just a natural way for us to say, ‘Hey, we’re going to celebrate all things water park, all things summer,’” said Cameron Levis, Recreation Division Manager for Bowling Green Parks & Recreation. “We give special discounts to the community so they can celebrate with us.”

Russell Sims Aquatic Center is more than just a spot to cool off — it’s a tribute to a man who helped shape the city’s park system. The center is named after Russell Sims, who served as Bowling Green’s Parks Director during the 1980s and 1990s.

The facility opened in 2000 and quickly grew into the largest water park in south-central Kentucky. Now in its 26th season, it continues to draw thousands of visitors every summer.

“This is our 26th season here at Russell Sims,” said Levis. “It’s been a staple of our community for all 26 years. We put a lot of love into it — it truly is a labor of love for us.”

Though the water park is only open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, staff members are busy behind the scenes year-round.

“We are constantly working throughout the entire year to make this experience the best it can be for the people who live, work, and play here in our community,” Levis said.

So while National Waterpark Day may be relatively new, the memories made at Russell Sims are anything but.
