Warren RECC, BGMU members asked to conserve energy

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – At the request of the Tennessee Valley Authority, two local utility companies are asking members to conserve power.

Warren Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation and Bowling Green Municipal Utilities are asking its members to reduce non-essential electricity between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Thursday and Friday.

WRECC says this will help power providers across the Tennessee Valley to keep delivering reliable service during this time of exceptionally cold temperatures.

“This is a precautionary measure,” said Butch Massey, vice president of Engineering and Operations at Warren RECC. “Anytime we experience a period of extreme cold, it significantly increases the demand for electricity. Together with TVA, we are proactively taking steps to reduce energy consumption by asking our members to take small practical steps that can have a big impact on our ability to meet the demand for electricity.”

BGMU says it has has cut back on power usage in its own facilities by adjusting thermostats, reducing lighting and taking
other measures to reduce electricity consumption.

Here are some quick ways to make an impact and save you money:

  • Lower your thermostat to 68°F degrees or a temperature that is both comfortable and safe.
  • Set your ceiling fan to spin clockwise, which pushes warm air down.
  • Unplug all non-essential electronics when not in use.
  • Turn off everything when you leave a room.
  • Delay using washing machines, dryers, dishwashers and other large appliances until the warmest part of the day when overall heating demand is low.

During temperature extremes, WRECC is also reminding the community to check on relatives, friends and neighbors to be sure they’re safe, as well as pets and livestock.
