Sykes appears in court, Grand Jury to review fatal Corvette Drive crash case
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WNKY) – A Warren County grand jury will review the case against a Bowling Green man charged in a crash that left a 19-year-old woman dead.
Dajuan Sykes, 20, appeared in Warren County District Court for a preliminary hearing Wednesday in connection with the May 2 head-on collision on Corvette Drive that claimed the life of Makyah L. Mackey of Bowling Green.
According to testimony from Bowling Green police Detective Ryan Bessette, officers responded to the 400 block of Corvette Drive at about 9:14 p.m. after receiving multiple calls reporting a serious crash. When officers arrived, firefighters were working to remove Mackey from her vehicle.
Police said Sykes initially told officers he had been sideswiped by another vehicle on Interstate Drive and forced into oncoming traffic. Investigators later testified they found no evidence of recent damage to corroborate that account.
The driver of the other vehicle referenced by Sykes later contacted dispatch and told officers Sykes approached from behind at a high rate of speed before crossing into the opposite lane and colliding with Mackey’s vehicle.
Investigators testified Sykes showed signs of impairment, including slurred speech, red and glassy eyes, and the odor of alcohol and marijuana. Officers also reported finding suspected marijuana, digital scales and THC vape products inside his vehicle.
Police obtained a warrant for a blood draw after Sykes declined field sobriety testing. Those results are still pending.
Mackey was transported from the scene but died later that night at The Medical Center at Bowling Green.
At the end of the hearing, the judge found probable cause and ordered the case sent to a grand jury.
Sykes remains charged with vehicular homicide, first-degree wanton endangerment, driving under the influence, reckless driving, trafficking in marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The investigation remains ongoing.
