Glasgow looks at possibility of downtown Amphitheater pavilion

GLASGOW Ky.-A meeting that took place at Glasgow City Hall discussed the topic of a downtown amphitheater and farmers market. One that will be housed between West Main Street and West Water Street. A support vote was held, and 11 members of the city council were in favor of the pavilion. Mayor Harold Armstrong is also in favor.

“The farmers market is the thing that’s really needed. It appears that the amphitheater wouldn’t be a drain. It would be a source of income and help pay for itself,” Armstrong said.

The estimated total cost sits at $4 million. The goal is to use as many private donations as possible before looking to other sources of funding. This is to ensure that the taxpayers are not the ones paying.

Downtown Glasgow is home to the Plaza Theater, which seats roughly 1,100 people. This means shows for live music will often end up sold out quicker. A new amphitheater would seat around 4,000 people, something residents say they can get behind.

“It helps out the elderly and older people because they’re always busy in the one they have down here,” said Glasgow resident Shawn Gence.

The project isn’t guaranteed. The finance committee still needs to meet before the green light is given. Only time will tell if it will happen.

“I think it’s something that will really add to the downtown area. It’ll really be a positive for the city of Glasgow if we could just make it happen,” Armstrong said.

The finance committee will meet on January 27 to discuss the feasibility of the project.
