Barren County School board votes to purchase 40 acres of land
GLASGOW Ky.-The student body of the Barren County School District is growing rapidly. What’s the fix? A $525,000 purchase of 40 acres.
“We’ve really populated about all of the green space that we have available to us. These 40 acres that the board has taken the option to purchase now gives us all the green space that wraps around WKU Glasgow. It runs to Ky. 249 and joins our existing property,” said Barren County School District Superintendent Bo Matthews.
The purchase of the land would mean more room for cars when it comes to picking up and dropping off students, and it’ll provide a back entrance to the high school for students to use.
“This gives us an opportunity to make a new connector to exit traffic buses, drivers, drop off and traffic on the way to highway 249,” Matthews said.
The school board has seen a need for more space due to the rapid growth of the student population, meaning a new Barren County School may occupy that space as well.
“We have over 5,000 students now. We’ve been a growth district for repeated years. Our high school is full, in a couple of elementary schools, we have overflow classes. We have waiting lists from other school districts. There’s definitely a need there,” said Barren County School District Assistant Superintendent Cortni Crews.
Overall, the school board is using this opportunity to provide an ideal stomping ground for the Barren County Trojans.
“I’m sure we’ll want community input on this. There will be surveys that go out and an opportunity for us all to evaluate and determine what’s best to better serve our citizens and students,” Crews said.
