Kentucky State Police shares winter driving safety tips

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky State Police is sharing some tips for staying safe on the roads this winter.

Troopers say drivers should make sure everyone is wearing a seatbelt and that their vehicle is maintained, especially in adverse weather conditions.

The following tips are also recommended, according to the Kentucky State Police:

Before You Leave

  • Dress warmly and keep a blanket in your vehicle.
  • Charge your cell phone before leaving.
  • Clear off your vehicle windows and lights.
  • Fill your tank in the event you are stranded.
  • Use an anti-ice solution windshield washer fluid.
  • Put together a kit of weather-related essentials.
    • This should include a cell phone, phone charger, blankets, a first-aid kit, jumper cables, a tool kit, a windshield scraper, road maps, a bag of sand or cat litter to help traction on ice, a collapsible shovel, a flashlight and extra batteries.

When Heading Out

  • Leave earlier than needed in case of delays.
  • Reduce your speed in winter conditions.
  • Turn on your vehicle’s headlamps for visibility.
  • Increase distance between vehicles for stopping.
  • Be more cautious on bridges and overpasses.
  •  Avoid using cruise control due to slippery surfaces.

If Stranded

  • Tie brightly colored cloth to the antenna as a signal to rescuers.
  • Move anything you need from the trunk into the passenger area.
  • Wrap yourself head to toe in blankets or extra clothes and stay inside.
  • Stay awake and move your arms and legs to improve circulation.
  • Run the motor (and heater) for about 10 minutes per hour, opening one window slightly to let air in. Make sure snow is not blocking the exhaust pipe, as this will reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

In addition, troopers advise to avoid unnecessary travel when possible during winter weather, such as snow, sleet and ice.
