CANEYVILLE, Ky. – A natural gas line fire has injured two in Grayson County.

According to a release by Grayson County Emergency Management, the agency was requested at 9:28 a.m. for a possible natural gas fire in the area of Lawrence Hayes Road and Log Cabin Lane in Caneyville on Wednesday.

The Caneyville Volunteer Fire Department, Grayson County EMS, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office and Leitchfield Fire Department initially responded. Upon arrival, emergency management says a fire was discovered at the back of a drilling truck.

According to Grayson County sheriff Norman Chaffins, a natural gas line fire ignited and was still active at the time of this initial report.

It was determined the fire was coming from a pipe and hole in the ground, emergency officials say. Firefighters contained the fire and protected a metal building exposure and the front of the truck cab.

Two victims at the scene suffered significant third-degree burns.

One of the victims was life-flighted from Caneyville Elementary School and the other victim was transported to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center by Grayson County EMS for treatment.

The Caneyville Volunteer Fire Department, Leitchfield Volunteer Fire Department, and the Falls of Rough Volunteer Fire Department worked to control the fire. Representatives from Frankfort and experts on natural gas line repair were also on the scene.

There were no evacuations as of Wednesday afternoon.

The fire was extinguished, and the scene was cleared with the opening sealed and capped off as of 1:17 p.m. Thursday, emergency officials say.
