BUTLER COUNTY, Ky. – A local animal shelter is working to make it easier to find a lost pet.

The Butler County Animal Shelter announced in a social media post that it will offer a free microchip clinic on Monday, July 1.

The shelter says the clinic is free to Butler County residents, while non-residents will be charged a $15 minimum donation.

The shelter also gave some tips to avoid runaway pets, such as not letting them outside on their own, not letting them run outside without a collar and not taking them out during peak firework hours.

Pet owners are also recommended to use a leash, bring them in for a microchip and make sure collars have updated information. The shelter says microchips are not tracking devices but instead offer the opportunity to have pets scanned and returned to owners.

The clinic will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
