Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program supports a healthier summer
BUTLER COUNTY, Ky. – It’s an annual program to help senior residents over the summer with staying healthy, and it can go a long way.
Community Action of Southern Kentucky has rolled out in several of their senior centers a nutrition program that helps both farmers and those over 60 years of age. Applicants must qualify with their age and income to be eligible, receiving a pre-loaded card to use at farmers markets with partnering farmers, which will allow them to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables.
News 40 spoke to Kathy Fugate, the senior center manager for Community Action, who told us that this can be a great help to seniors, who more than likely live on a fixed income.
Fugate encouraged any community interested in providing something similar to their older population to reach out to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture to get the ball rolling.
