Kentucky officials say highway fatalities increased last year

FRANKFORT, Ky. – According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, highway fatalities in Kentucky increased over the last year.

The release states that highway fatalities increased up to 813 deaths in 2023 compared to 744 that occurred in 2022 and the highest it has been since 2016.

Breaking down the numbers, of those 813 fatalities, about 51% were not wearing a seat belt and 16% had alcohol involved in the accident. Pedestrians accounted for 137 deaths while motorcyclists accounted for 105.

So far in 2024, preliminary numbers down nearly 14% compared to the same time last year with 170 roadway deaths indicated.
