WASHINGTON – State officials shared statements after the announcement Tuesday that Sen. Mitch McConnell will step down as Senate leader.

Rep. Brett Guthrie released the following statement on Wednesday:

“I am honored to serve with leader McConnell representing the Commonwealth of Kentucky the last 15 years, as well as call him a close friend and mentor. Leader McConnell is a stalwart figure representing Kentucky’s values at the highest level and bringing our Commonwealth to the forefront of discussions facing our nation. His dedicated 39 plus years in the Senate and his historic leadership as Senate Republican leader for the last 17 years is unmatched.”

Guthrie continued, stating, “I thank him for his service not just to our nation but to each of our 120 counties across Kentucky. I look forward to working with leader McConnell throughout the rest of the 118th Congress to continue delivering for Kentucky communities across our Second District.”

Attorney General Russell Coleman also released the following statement:

“Kentucky’s own Mitch McConnell is the most consequential leader in Senate history. Leader McConnell has singlehandedly made sure Kentucky punches above our weight, and his legacy of accomplishment can be seen in every corner of the Bluegrass State. My family cherishes Leader McConnell’s kindness and mentorship—shared with us time and time again. It will continue to be a high honor to work with Leader McConnell as we serve our Commonwealth and the families who call it home.”

McConnell shared his own thoughts on the decision in a statement released earlier today.
