Some exercises may help treat depression, study says

(CNN) – When a wave of depression hits, a new study suggests physical activity may help significantly.

That comes from new research published in “The BMJ.”

It suggests several exercises, like walking, jogging, yoga and strength training, can be just as beneficial as therapy when it comes to treating depression.

The lead study author says they analyzed data from 218 studies with more than 14,000 people.

Researchers found exercise can serve as effective treatment alongside options, including therapy and medication.

Depression affects between 10 and 25% of the population, but it’s estimated that about half of those who suffer receive treatment.

Of course, motivation is a common struggle, and depression can add to the challenge.

However, the study author says it’s important to make an exercise plan and stick to it as if your mental health depends on it, because it does.
