Valentine’s Day candy is looking more expensive than its regular counterparts

(CNN) -You can call it a holiday markup.

Some special Valentine’s Day editions of popular candies appear to be priced higher than about the same amount of their regular versions.

They include Haribo, Sour Patch Kids and Jolly Ranchers.

That’s the determination of a food and cooking website publisher.

Fletcher is a former supermarket industry data analyst.

She looked at the cost of a few Valentine’s Day-themed candies at retailers this year and compared them to regular versions.

Looking at price per ounce, she saw a hefty premium.

For example, a 7-ounce Haribo Goldbears gummi bears valentine heart box on Walmart.com is priced at $5.97.

But a regular 8-ounce bag is half of that at $2.38.

That amounts to a 55 cent per ounce bump in price.

Walmart said it’s looking into the price differences, but it said some of the Valentine’s Day candy items on its website are listed by third-party sellers on Walmart Marketplace.

A retail expert notes there can be a good reason for such holiday markups, such as more costs to make seasonal items since they’re for a limited sales period. They are also made in limited quantities.
