Eviction notice served to Logan County Humane Society
LOGAN COUNTY, Ky. – An eviction notice has been served to the Logan County Humane Society, as 6 months has passed since the Logan County Fiscal Court voted to stop offering financial assistance to the non-profit and terminated the contract betwixt the two to hold the humane society responsible for handling animal control.
News 40 spoke to humane society president Julie Martin, who said she is asking the community to help them out with finding a new home. Martin said though they have been looking for a new building, they have yet to find one since July of 2023 that fits their preferred size and budget.
Martin told the station they’re willing to explore any options available for them whether it be rent, rent to own, purchase or donate. The society’s main concern is to get into a building that they can outfit to run a working facility. Martin said if you know of any viable locations, she asks that you contact the humane society via phone or email.
Much concern has been expressed on the Logan County Humane Society’s Facebook page for the animals that are in their care and what might happen to them when the eviction notice’s 30 days is up, to which Logan County Judge-Executive Phil Baker spoke to News 40 to clear up.
Judge Baker said to the station that the eviction notice was just a formality to show that “the time has come for the two entities to split”. As of July 1, 2022, the county’s animal control moved into the same building, the judge said it’s hard for two people to do the same job in the same space.
Judge Baker also said the animals that are in the building currently will not be subjected to anything but continued care in the building under county supervision. “We are not going to get rid of any of these animals, that is not the case here”, the judge added.
Per Kentucky state law, all counties are to have some sort of animal control, and animal control is only legally obligated to service dogs. Moving forward, Logan County Animal Control will continue to operate out of the existing building and service any stray and owner surrender dogs provided they have room.
