Voter registration at local college

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Election season is nearing and the group Kentuckians for the Commonwealth is making voting registration easy.

Summer Graves, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth “voting empowerer”, visited SKYCTC this week to give students the opportunity to register.

Graves says that her job is both rewarding and challenging.

“It can be challenging sometimes to make people understand why it is so important to vote. I think that some people feel like it doesn’t really matter, or they’re only one person so how could their vote make a difference,” Graves said.

She says that what a lot of people don’t realize is that over 310,000 people in the state can’t vote because they have a felony in their past.

She encourages those who can to exercise their right.

According to Pew Research, Baby Boomers and older generations have been more likely to vote in midterm elections than younger generations at the same age on average.

SKYCTC senior Brittany Rounce wants her generation to make a difference.

“Our voice won’t be represented if we’re not going to take the time to just take two seconds to vote. Changes can’t be done if we’re not putting in our input,” Rounce said.

Kentuckians for the Commonwealth strives to educate people on the importance of voting. They have volunteers like Graves who help people register, take registration cards to the clerk’s office and give people rides to the polls.

The last day to register to vote is Monday, Oct. 7 and General Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5.
