BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Master police officer Matt Davis is being recognized for laying down his life for others, police say.

Davis received the Silver Cross Tuesday evening during a city commission meeting.

The Bowling Green Police Department says this award is given to “members of the department who have been wounded or have given their life in the line of duty as a result of a hostile encounter.”

Davis sustained multiple gunshot wounds on July 6 when he responded to a disturbance at 1930 Russellville Road. Shortly after arrival, police say Davis encountered the suspect, who brandished a handgun.

Davis then alerted employees inside the business to “get down and take cover,” placing their lives ahead of his own, police say.
