Nashville mayor requests investigation after release of potential school shooting documents

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (CNN) – Nashville’s mayor has requested an investigation into writings posted on social media by a conservative talk show host that are allegedly from the Covenant school shooter.

Three photos of the documents were released Monday by a conservative political commentator.

Police have previously said that the killer left behind writings about the planned attack.

The March 27 shooting at the private Christian school killed six people, including three children.

The shooter, a 28-year-old former student, was also killed.

Nashville mayor Freddie O’Connell said Monday he’s concerned about how these images could have been released and how they’ll impact a community that’s still grieving.

A legal fight about the release of the writings has been playing out in court in Nashville for months.

Parents of two of the children killed in the shooting had requested they not be revealed, saying it exacerbates the trauma they’ve already experienced.

An attorney for the shooter’s parents said they couldn’t authenticate the documents and that they didn’t release them.

Metro Nashville police released a statement Monday concerning the documents:

“The MNPD is in communication with the Metropolitan Department of Law as an investigation, begun this morning, continues into the dissemination of three photographs of writings during an on-line discussion about Covenant School. The photographs are not MNPD crime scene images.”

“The police department has been in contact with a representative of Covenant families. Police department counselors are available to assist them in coping with the emotional trauma caused by the dissemination.”
