MAYFIELD / DAWSON SPRINGS, Ky. – Gov. Andy Beshear presented $5.2 million Friday to help rebuild 26 homes damaged by the December tornadoes in Mayfield, Kentucky.

While visiting western Kentucky, the governor’s office says he also gave five Mayfield families affected by the storms keys to new homes and helped break ground on two new homes for tornado survivors in Dawson Springs.

“Today, as we get closer to the two-year anniversary of the tornadoes, this community is full of hope,” Beshear says. “Every home built or repaired allows for another Kentucky family to begin their next chapter. Western Kentucky is strong and full of compassionate, resilient people. And all of Team Kentucky is ready to stand with these folks to not only rebuild but to create a brighter future than ever before.”

The award presented comes from Community Development Block Grant Disaster Relief funding, Beshear’s office says.

“My family is blessed by this opportunity. Due to the losses and rising prices in our society since the tornado, buying a house seemed impossible! But God will always allow the unexpected to happen, you just need a little faith!” said new homeowner, Crystal Parrot.

So far, the governor says over 147 home-building projects are completed, being constructed or approved to begin construction with the help of almost $11 million from the Team Western Kentucky Tornado Relief Fund.

Beshear thanked nonprofit building partners, which include The Hope Initiative, Habitat for Humanity, Homes & Hope for Kentucky, Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders, The Mayfield/Graves Fuller Center for Housing and The Mayfield/Graves Long-Term Recovery Group.
