Edmonson County takes step closer to a potential animal shelter

BROWNSVILLE Ky.-While animals wait to meet their new families, it’s essential for them to have temporary homes in animal shelters. Edmonson County may be in the process of getting an animal shelter of their own.

Right now, the Edmonson County Humane Society is being run from the home of Ken and Katie Smith. Katie said she’s looking forward to the county possibly having this facility.

“I’m glad that the county is moving in a positive direction towards an animal shelter, but right now it looks like we’re just moving toward a land purchase,” Smith said.

Edmonson County Fiscal Court voted to a buy 12 acres of space for the furry citizens of Brownsville. The area isn’t being disclosed. The county will be paying $20,000 down and another $85,000 once the seller moves from the property, Edmonson County Judge-Executive Will Cannon said. Without an animal shelter, Brownsville is contracted with the Bowling Green Warren-County Humane Society, who of course have been happy to lend a helping paw.

“We’re very very excited for them. There’s so much potential in Kentucky for so much growth in our animal welfare. This is a major step, especially for a little county like Edmonson County that can prove to the rest of them that it’s doable,” said Tracy Moser, education center coordinator of the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society.

Those from the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane society said they’re just as happy that an Edmonson County animal shelter is now a possibility.

“We’re very proud that the fiscal court has decided to make this decision. This is a big step for their county and a big step for animal welfare in Kentucky. We’re so happy that they have so much support, we can’t wait to see it happen,” Moser said.

Katie doesn’t work with lot of room, meaning she can only house kittens. For this reason, she said a new animal shelter will be a treat.
