Warren County Sheriff’s Office warns of new scam that sounds legitimate
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Another scam is hitting the phone lines of Warren County citizens, and this one sounds incredibly legitimate.
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office says scammers are calling people pretending to be from their department.
However, if you happen to miss it and call them back, you’ll hear:
“Thank you for calling the Warren County Sheriff’s Office located at 429 East 10th Avenue in Bowling Green. If this is an emergency, please hang up and dial 911. Please listen closely as our menu options have recently changed.”
If you happen to answer, they’ll say you’ve missed a court date or federal grand jury.
Initially, you’ll be directed to the sheriff’s office, but they then say if you show up, you’ll be arrested on site.
The only way out of trouble is to pay them with gift cards.
WCSO says they do not call to let you know if you have warrants or to pay a fine.
“We just want to warn the community about these scams… if they ever have a question, they can call into our non-emergency number and ask us. They sometimes spoof our number so the number may come across looking like our number. If you actually call the number, it’ll come to the sheriff’s office,” Sheriff Brett Hightower says.
He also says he’s seen several people fall for this scam and send thousands of dollars overseas, so it’s incredibly important to be aware.
If you have questions, the non-emergency line number for WCSO is 270-842-1633.
