United Way of Southern Kentucky donates over $2 million to local projects in Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The United Way of Southern Kentucky gives back to the community with some projects.

“This is really, truly a historic day for United Way of Southern Kentucky. Never have we announced this much funding in one single day and today we announced $2,243,500 for tornado relief for some major impact projects that we wanted to invest in,” Debbie Hills, CEO of United Way of Southern Kentucky says.

Three different projects will be focused on, including one from Habitat for Humanity.

“The funding will be multifaceted for us. We’ll be building at least ten new homes and then also working on a storm shelter for impacted families. That’s been one of the big things that they said, ‘We want more storm security.’ We looked at the doubling, our plans for a community facility also to provide that storm shelter functionality,” Matt Sheffield, chief development officer for Habitat for Humanity, says.

Other projects include new homes for the Housing Authority and a natural park near Jennings Creek. United Way is honored to be able to help the community in this way.

“As we’ve gone through this work over the past 20 months, we’ve been able to assist a lot of people today. I talked about 302 households that we had worked with through disaster case management services and working to get them back to a place that was as good as or better than they had before. Yes, the lives of those people have been touched, but I can tell you that we as an organization have been far more touched,” Hills says.
