Swifts swoop through Portland, Oregon

(KGW) Birds are the word in Portland, Oregon.

Thousands of people recently filled the hillside at Chapman Elementary School to watch the migratory population of Vaux’s swifts fly out of the school’s chimney and swirl into the sky.

Experts say the birds first came to Portland in the late 1980s, to claim a sleeping spot on their migration route to Central America.

It’s one of the largest known roosting sites of migrating Vaux’s swifts.
