Trump teases “sanctuary cities” plan

(NBC News) President Trump confirmed Friday his administration is “giving strong considerations” to a policy that would bus undocumented immigrants who have been detained at the border to so-called sanctuary cities…and release them.

“They want more people in their sanctuary cities. Well – we’ll give them more people. We can give ’em a lot. We can give them an UNLIMITED supply” Mr. Trump tweeted.

His announcement contradicts his own Homeland Security department, which just hours earlier told NBC News this was a suggestion that was floated and rejected, which ended any further discussion.

A source tells NBC News the idea that this would be done as political retaliation is “absolutely ridiculous,” but in his tweet the president cited Democrats “unwillingness to change” what he calls “very dangerous immigration laws.”

The president has long slammed “sanctuary cities,” mostly Democratic areas across the country that limit their cooperation with federal immigration enforcement and protect undocumented immigrants from deportation.

A former Homeland Security official tells NBC News the idea was rejected because it was “so illegal.”

“It is just another notion that is unworthy of the presidency of the United States and disrespectful, the challenges we face as a country, as a people to address who we are — a nation of immigrants,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
