XX Club marks 125 years of learning and fellowship in Bowling Green
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WNKY) – Members of the XX Club celebrated 125 years of literary discussion, education and fellowship Sunday during an open house that brought together women from literary clubs across Bowling Green.
Founded in 1901, the XX Club is a women’s literary organization limited to 20 active members. The club’s name comes from the Roman numeral “XX,” symbolizing its membership of 20 women.
The anniversary event highlighted the club’s long-standing commitment to lifelong learning and provided an opportunity for members of other literary clubs to join in the celebration.
“We’re all just ladies who want to continue learning throughout our lives,” XX Club President Vicki Fitch said.
Fitch said the club meets 10 times each year, with members either hosting a meeting or presenting a topic for discussion. Subjects range from literature and art to current events, and the club occasionally invites guest speakers, including local authors, to share their work.
The 125th anniversary comes as the organization has returned to full membership following challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’re very proud to be at full membership,” Fitch said. “We’re very proud to be at our full membership and the gathering together to just continue to learn.”
Sunday’s open house also celebrated Bowling Green’s deep-rooted literary club tradition. Fitch said members intentionally invited women from other literary organizations throughout the city to share in the occasion.
“Bowling Green just has an amazing number of ladies literary clubs,” Fitch said. “We’re just excited to be able to celebrate with our friends and get to know other people in other ladies literary clubs.”
For more than a century, the XX Club has provided a forum for women to explore new ideas, discuss intellectual topics and build lasting friendships. Sunday’s celebration honored that legacy while looking ahead to the organization’s next chapter.
