SASSAFRAS, Ky. – One woman is dead following a crash early Friday in Knott County.

According to the Kentucky State Police, troopers received a call shortly before 4 a.m. regarding a single-vehicle collision on KY-15 in the Sassafras community.

Authorities say a preliminary investigation shows 39-year-old Melisa Slone of Garner was driving a vehicle southbound on KY-15 when the vehicle struck a rock in the roadway.

Troopers say the impact caused the vehicle to lose control and overturn, causing Slone to be ejected from the vehicle.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Knott County Coroner’s Office.

The preliminary investigation indicates that no seat belt was in use at the time of the collision, authorities say.

Authorities say alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor, and toxicology results are pending.
