Trump to talk infrastructure with top Democrats
(NBC News) Crumbling roads and bridges are the topic for President Trump and the nation’s top two Democrats Wednesday morning.
The president will sit down with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to discuss a $2 trillion infrastructure plan to fix roads, power grids and include broadband internet.
But construction talk quickly gives way to obstruction investigations prompted by special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian election meddling.
On Tuesday, Democrats issued two new subpoenas for Hope Hicks, the president’s former communications director and Annie Donaldson, who served as chief of staff to former White House Counsel Don McGahn.
The subpoenas came on the same day that McGahn complied with the president’s order to snub a House hearing on the Russia investigation. Democrats are frustrated by the president’s attempts to stonewall Congress, and many are increasing the pressure on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to begin impeachment proceedings.
Speaker Pelosi will likely discuss those frustrations during a closed-door meeting with Democrats Wednesday, before she speaks to the president.
