Trial date set for those charged in connection with death of WKU student

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A trial date is set for three men facing charges in connection with the death of a Western Kentucky University student.
In July 2023, 21-year-old WKU student Ayanna Morgan died after authorities say she was assaulted at the Muse apartments in Bowling Green.
According to a report, officers arrived and found a man attempting to assist Morgan. Police say Morgan was speaking and said “she couldn’t breathe.” Police say Morgan had several wounds from at least one gunshot.
Officers say they believe Morgan was in a brief struggle before she was shot.
The report further states officers provided aid to her until EMS arrived. Morgan was flown to TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville after being treated at a local hospital.
Police later confirmed that Morgan had died.

Police say a few days after the shooting, Kobee Lancaster, 26, of Bowling Green, turned himself in and was arrested. Lancaster faces charges of second-degree assault, first-degree wanton endangerment, complicity with tampering with physical evidence, second-degree hindering prosecution or apprehension and leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid or assistance.
Malik Jones, 32, was apprehended in Detroit, Michigan in October 2023. According to court documents, Malik Jones faces a murder charge in connection with Morgan’s death, along with tampering with physical evidence and first-degree persistent felony offender.
Malik Jones’ brother, 32-year-old Malcolm Jones, was arrested in August of 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia. Malcolm Jones faces charges of complicity to murder and tampering with physical evidence, according to court records.
Malik and Malcolm Jones remain at the Warren County Regional Jail. Lancaster was released from the Warren County Regional Jail in November of 2023.
A pre-trial conference for the case was held on Tuesday, according to court documents.
The trial for all three men will be held July 8 at 9 a.m.
