Skeleton’s Lair opens for 20th season on Friday the 13th

SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. – The Halloween season is almost here, even if the weather outside might not feel like it.

On Friday night, one local haunted attraction is trying to get patrons into the holiday spirit, opening its gates for the 20th year.

“People can come out on Friday the 13th and get a taste of Halloween,” said Amy Burge, owner of Skeleton’s Lair.

For the past 20 years, Skeleton’s Lair has been providing thrills and shrills to any person who’s brave enough to visit during the spooky season.

“Twentieth year of fear, that’s really our main focus this year,” Burge added.

It takes a long time to get all the buildings ready for the first customers of the season, but we’re not talking just days or weeks.

“Seasonal events, people tend to lose track of the fact that we literally have guys out here working just about every day of the year,” said Burge. “Everything at our park has been built from scratch. Even though we’re not open every day of the year, it certainly is a day and night job.”

Since it first began scaring visitors in 1999, a lot has changed at the Scottsville attraction.

“It’s been a great progression through the year,” said Burge. “Our crew is phenomenal. We’ve built our crew up year after year. We have a few actors that have been with us all 20 years if you can imagine that.”

It’s a family affair at Skeleton’s Lair, but Burge said that family feel wouldn’t be complete without customers who come back year after year.

“The most rewarding experience is to hear the customers,” she said. “They notice the growth. Some people come two and three in a season. It’s just great to see the feedback.”

There’s a lot of new things in store for guests in year 20 of the park, and Burge and the rest of the crew can’t wait to scare you.

“It’s been a lot of fun along the way,” she said. “A lot of hard work, but we’re really excited for it.”
