Sinkhole on Kiwanis Drive reopens following rain
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A sinkhole on Kiwanis Drive and Shawnee Way reopened following the storm that swept through Bowling Green.
Crews were on scene this morning stabilizing the sinkhole to prevent it from having further issues.
Director of Public Works Andy Souza said a water line is damaged. Due to the weather expected, fully repairing the sinkhole has been pushed back until further notice.
“What we’re locked in to now is, we’ve got a lot more rain coming so, we can’t start to this repair immediately. We’re going to have to just stabilize this site and wait until the weather allows us to get back in here and begin to work again. So, what we’re doing is just securing it, making it safe,” said Matt Powell, Public Works environmental manager.
There is currently a gate surrounding the sinkhole to prevent anyone from going in it and to remind the public to be careful.
“If it does begin to grow, then we’ll just move that back and eventually if something extreme were to happen we would bring in equipment,” Powell said.
According to Powell, Starting January 2027, the City of Bowling Green is transitioning from having a storm water department to having a storm water utility.
That brings a new fee for residents and businesses in the city that will go towards helping repair sinkholes and maintain sewers.
If you spot a sink hole or suspect one, you are urged to call Public City Works or email stormwater@BGKY.org.
