Scottsville, Allen County recognize Overdose Awareness Day
SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. — Community leaders in Scottsville and Allen County gathered Monday to recognize Aug. 31 as Overdose Awareness Day, bringing attention to the impact of substance use and overdose in the community.
The proclamation signing was held at the Old Allen County Courthouse and included Scottsville Mayor David Burch, Allen County Judge-Executive Dennis Harper and VH Dream Center Executive Director Amy Payne.
Payne said the day provides an opportunity to remember people who have died from overdose, raise awareness about the crisis and remind those struggling with addiction that recovery is possible.
“We know the names. We know the faces. We know the families and the stories behind the statistics,” Payne said.
Burch officially proclaimed Aug. 31, 2026, as International Overdose Awareness Day in the City of Scottsville.
The proclamation recognizes the lives lost to overdose, acknowledges the grief of families and loved ones, and calls attention to overdose prevention and recovery resources.
Harper said substance use disorder can affect people regardless of their socioeconomic background.
“If you need help, we want you to find help,” Harper said.
For Allen County resident Jarrin Preston, the recognition is personal. Preston said he overdosed at a young age and has seen progress in the community’s approach to addiction and recovery.
“Seeing the change in the community and the progress that we’re working towards is just amazing,” Preston said.
Payne said the community’s willingness to openly discuss addiction is an important step toward addressing the issue.
“In order to address any problem, you got to talk about it,” Payne said.
The VH Dream Center works to connect people struggling with addiction to resources and support as they move toward recovery. Payne said the organization aims to be there for people throughout their recovery journey.
For families who have lost someone to overdose, Payne offered a message of support: “We love you. We see you. We honor your loss. And we’re here for you too.”
