Protest held to support choice of vaccination after former employees escorted from Med Center Health premises
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Thursday, Med Center Health escorted former employees off the premises after they refused to get the COVID-19 vaccine, which is now mandated for all staff members.
In July, Med Center Health informed employees they would have to get vaccinated against COVID-19 by August 31 or they would be terminated.
According to employees, when September rolled around and the vaccination deadline passed, Med Center Health never gave them an official termination letter and the employees said they never submitted a resignation, so they showed up to work on Thursday.
“I don’t know if I have a job I don’t know if I don’t have a job I have not resigned I have not signed resignation papers and I have not been terminated, yet I cannot pick up shifts at work,” said Murphy.
When they arrived at work they were informed that they had been terminated and needed to turn in their key cards and were asked to leave the premises.
When they refused, they were escorted from the property.
Friday morning, protesters showed up to express their feelings about the vaccination requirement, including one, now former, Medical Center employee, Brittany Murphy.
Murphy says things were much different when the pandemic began.
“When all this started we were told by Medical Center higher-ups not to wear masks because we would scare the public. We would make them think that there was something major going on,” said Murphy.
Then, she says, she worked through the PPE shortage too.
“We were given one N95 to keep in a paper bag until it literally fell apart so months and months I use the same N 95 as well as everybody else in the facility so they allowed us to do that and treat Covid patients properly for that amount of time but yet now we’re being let go because of a mandatory vaccine that just hasn’t been proven,” said Murphy.
The hospital released a statement saying the following:
“Med Center Health stands by our decision requiring staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19. We remain focused on the health and safety of our patients, staff, and community.
“Since our vaccine requirements were announced in late July, approximately 1,000 Med Center Health staff members have chosen to be vaccinated raising our number of vaccinated staff to over 3,500. Med Center Health has now reached 100% compliance with our COVID-19 vaccine requirements.
“180 staff members were terminated due to our vaccine requirement; however, at the same time, we have welcomed 178 new, vaccinated team members who have or will be joining us within the next week.
“We are very proud of our employees and physicians who are setting such a strong example for our community by choosing to be vaccinated. We encourage the community to follow the example of our healthcare team and get vaccinated for COVID-19.
“We will continue to do our very best to care for the communities we serve.”
