Operation Safe Driver Week focuses on commercial vehicle safety

HENDERSON , Ky. – The Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division is joining in for a national effort to improve road safety.
According to the agency, Operation Safe Driver Week will last from July 12-18. During this time, law enforcement and safety agencies will be focusing on identifying and stopping commercial vehicle drivers engaging in unsafe driving practices.
These include but are not limited to speeding, distracted driving, improper lane changes and failure to wear seat belts.
Officer Michael Smith, West Commercial Vehicle Enforcement spokesperson, explains why this initiative is important.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, including those who drive commercial vehicles,” Smith said. “Operation Safe Driver Week allows us to not only promote public safety through ensuring that everyone is following the rules of the road, but also to provide education and meaningful interactions with drivers across the state.”
KSP reminds all drivers to slow down, give trucks plenty of space, buckle up and report unsafe drivers.
If you encounter a reckless driver, troopers say to report them to the closest local law enforcement office. In addition, troopers remind drivers to avoid cutting off commercial vehicle when merging or changing lanes.
