News 40 Health Reports: helping your joints age gracefully

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – If you haven’t experienced an orthopedic injury, chances are good you know someone who has.

And with people living longer, the risk of bones and joints failing only goes up.

Dr. Romine, an orthopedic surgeon at Graves Gilbert Clinic says despite the best efforts, many orthopedic injuries can’t be easily prevented-whether it’s due to the effects of aging or from accidents such as tripping and falling around the house.

But it is possible to reduce some of the wear and tear of your joints.

Dr. Romine is an advocate of staying in good physical shape. He says talking to your doctor about exercises that can help keep your bones and joints strong is a good idea.

And if you think spending a long time in a rehabilitation program is necessary after having orthopedic surgery, think again. Dr. Romine says in many cases, it’s possible to do the exercises used in physical therapy at home.

It starts with talking to your healthcare provider about what you need to do to get back to your best.
