Motorcycle safety tips from the Warren County Sheriff’s Office
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – After a motorcycle collision at the Nashville and Richpond Road intersection on Sunday, the Warren County Sheriff’s Office and Bowling Green Police Department noticed a shocking trend.
“We’ve just seen that we have had several motorcycle accidents that resulted in injury and or death over the past several years. I believe that we have had some states that we have gotten in. I think there was 114 different accidents involving motorcycles. 79 of those were injury accidents and eight fatalities,” sheriff Brett Hightower says.
That’s why it is important to pay attention while on the road and watch out for any motorcyclists who may be hard to see.
“From what we see a lot of times, I believe that you kind of train yourself… drivers train themselves to look for certain objects. When you come up to intersections or when you’re driving in general, I think that you are looking for a certain size diameter with a different vehicle. A lot of times I think that somehow another motorcycle just don’t seem to register with that,” Hightower says.
Not only should drivers slow down to make sure they can see everyone on the road, but motorcyclists should take extra precautions as well.
“It’s always important to use protective gear when you’re out riding motorcycles, whether that’s helmet or other protective jackets and pants and things of that nature, I think the more is always better,” Hightower says.
