Metcalfe Co. Animal Shelter requesting volunteers

The Metcalfe County Animal Shelter is asking for your help.

The shelters is located just off North Main Street and River Road in Edmonton, and with no sign on the main road, you may just miss it.

It has been in operation for about a year-and-a-half and is single-handedly run by Donna Lafever and her husband, who operates the Edmonton Veterinary Clinic right next door.

At times, Donna says the shelter has had to house over 30 dogs at once.

“It’s a lot of work, it’s a seven day a week job,” Donna explains. “The county was affiliated with the Bee Springs Animal Shelter and it was closed down for abuse and they had nowhere to go with the animals, and the judge came to us and asked us if we would be willing to do the shelter down here [by the clinic.]”

Donna says it was a job they felt they had to take on, although tiring, it is rewarding to see the animals find their forever homes.

Every day and every adoption still remains a constant struggle, though.

“We have a lot of problems. It’s sort of a baby step operation. Most of my dogs are bigger dogs, mixed dogs, a lot of them have problems and some of them are hard cases. That’s where my priority is, is on those hard cases.”

Donnie says she hopes they can partner with local shelters in the future to help find these animals homes as quickly as possible.

If you would like to volunteer, you can call the Edmonton Veterinary Clinic at (270) 432-2080.

Volunteers would mostly be walking and socializing with the dogs.
