LEITCHFIELD, Ky. (K105) – A statement is now available regarding an ongoing investigation into a recording device reportedly found at Grayson County High School.

According to a report by K105, on Monday, Oct. 19, Interim Chief of Police for the Leitchfield Police Department Ian Renfrow shared the following update:

“After numerous requests, I have decided to release the following update in regards to the ongoing investigation involving the recording device (suspected camera) located on the property of GCHS,” Renfrow stated. “It is very typical for electronic based crime to move very slowly through the investigative process. As I have previously stated, this agency will continue to investigate and involve every entity and resource at our disposal to bring this case to a logical conclusion. Parents and other community members have every reason to request information and answers. We will not release any evidence located at this time and will not release investigative tactics being utilized by our detective or other law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation.”

The case is in connection with a recording device allegedly discovered in the bathroom of a softball complex at Grayson County High School on Sept. 17. A search warrant execution followed in late September at a residence, according to K105.

At the time, Renfrow stated authorities were working with “very stale information.”

Authorities say the initial investigation was assigned to a school resource officer, who followed up on the information and confirmed the device had been found by middle school softball players, who reported the incident to a member of the coaching staff.

Police say they received information from a concerned parent, and the device was removed before officers had knowledge of the incident.

According to a previous release by Renfrow, officers and school staff “desperately searched for the device until learning that it may be in the possession of a member of the coaching staff.” At that time, police said the investigation was turned over from the SRO to a detective, with all relevant information shared with school staff.

“I assure you,” Renfrow said, “that we have not stopped, and will not stop investigating until we have a complete and thorough case, built upon factual evidence. This will not be ignored, forgotten, or swept under the rug. Those showing patience, we thank you for that and hope that the community will trust that work is being done.”

Additional updates on this case will be shared as they are made available.
