Leitchfield man wins thousands on Powerball ticket

LEITCHFIELD, Ky. – “I don’t get too excited. I’ll wait until I have the check in the bank.”

A Leitchfield man is thousands of dollars richer after winning the lottery with a Powerball ticket.

The winner, Sanford Meyers, matched four white ball numbers and the Powerball in the drawing on May 4, winning $50,000.

Meyers was in disbelief.

“I told my wife I needed to look at that thing,” Meyers said. “I pulled up the website and looked at it [ticket] and said, “I think I won a hundred and fifty bucks.”

Meyers purchased the winning ticket at the Center Court Food Mart in Leitchfield.

Meyers says he only purchases one Powerball ticket per month.

Kentucky Lottery officials say that Meyers left his ticket on his desk for several days before checking it at the store.

“She [store clerk] scanned it and said, ‘$50,000,’” Meyers recalled. “I said, ‘you’re kidding me?’ I made her scan it at least three times! I’m happy, I still can’t believe it, though.”

After taxes, Meyers received $36,000. Officials say Meyers told them that he has no immediate plans for the money.

Center Court Food Mart will receive $500 for selling the winning ticket.
