West African envoys suspend talks with Mali’s military junta
BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — West African mediators have suspended talks for now with Mali’s military junta Monday after failing to reach an agreement. Still unresolved are who will lead the volatile country during a transitional period after a coup last week and how long that process will take. Mali’s democratically elected president announced his resignation in a midnight broadcast last week. The military junta detained him but insist Keita’s decision was not made under duress. The international community has been calling for an immediate return to civilian rule in Mali, where the U.N., France and others have been working to contain Islamic extremists for more than seven years.
