Virus puts UK PM in intensive care; Japan declares emergency

LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson spent the night in intensive care and was receiving oxygen for treatment of his coronavirus illness. Authorities in New York and elsewhere in Europe are hoping that a leveling off of deaths and new hospitalizations signaled that the pandemic’s two new epicenters have turned a corner. In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the first signs the outbreak there may be nearing its peak, while warning that it’s no time to relax social distancing restrictions. China reported no new deaths over the past 24 hours for the first time since it began publishing statistics on the disease. Japan declared a monthlong state of emergency for Tokyo and six other regions.
