French Open champion Nadal reaches 3rd round on empty court

PARIS (AP) — Defending champion Rafael Nadal celebrated his 35th birthday with a 6-0, 7-5, 6-2 win against Richard Gasquet at the French Open. He improved to 17-0 for his career against the Frenchman since they first met in 2004. There were no fans on on Court Philippe Chatrier to witness Nadal’s 102nd victory at Roland Garros with all leaving the grounds by 9 p.m. because of coronavirus rules. Top-ranked women’s player Ash Barty earlier retired from her second-round match because of a hip injury and defending champion Iga Swiatek beat Rebecca Peterson 6-1, 6-1. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic both reached the men’s third round.
