Rockies minor leaguer Welker gets 80-game drug suspension

NEW YORK (AP) — Colorado Rockies minor league third baseman Colton Welker has been given an 80-game suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. The suspension was announced by the commissioner’s office on Thursday. The 23-year-old Welker is currently on the roster for Triple-A Albuquerque and has hit .313 at four minor league levels. A highly touted prospect, Welker helped lead Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, to the state title in 2016. That was less than two years before a mass shooting at the school killed 17 students, teachers and staff. Welker routinely works with Stoneman Douglas players in the offseason.
