BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – House on the Hill Inc., a local nonprofit, is sharing what to expect in the next month ahead.

The nonprofit shared in a Facebook post on Monday that, as November approaches, its programs will run as usual despite the government shutdown.

Executive Director Joel Hawkins says the organization wanted to reassure the more than 600 families it serves each month.

“We wanted those families to know we’re going to continue to do what we’ve always done, providing their food boxes, whether that means delivering or letting them pick up here,” Hawkins said.

He added that while the shutdown doesn’t affect House on the Hill financially, it could have a big impact on the people they serve.

“When people lose their food stamps, that’s not just extra money, that’s part of their budget,” Hawkins said. “For some of our clients, that’s a quarter of their income gone.”

House on the Hill says from Nov. 14-15, shopping days will take place at The Grocery Richardsville. This will serve current clients or those living in the Richardsville Elementary School District, the nonprofit says.

New clients will need to take a few steps first.

The nonprofit says it will need new clients to present a government-issued ID, proof of income and residency within the Richardsville school district, and the client’s food stamp app, card, or letter to determine eligibility.

On Nov. 22, current clients will have their food box delivery and pickup day.

Hawkins says House on the Hill is also preparing for one of its biggest efforts of the year, Thanksgiving boxes for families in need.

“Last year we did 900 Thanksgiving boxes, and this year we’re doing a thousand,” he said. “We’ve partnered with Warren County Public Schools, Bowling Green Independent Schools, and several local businesses to make that happen.”

Each box, Hawkins said, includes holiday staples such as chicken or turkey, stuffing, and sides to help families create their own traditions at home.

“Our food boxes provide about a week’s worth of meals for a family of four,” Hawkins said. “It makes a huge difference.”
