Future Lady Cats Basketball Camp helps build skills for girls in Edmonson County

BROWNSVILLE, Ky. – The next generation of Lady Wildcats hit the hardwood Friday as Edmonson County High School hosted its annual Future Lady Cats Summer Basketball Camp.

The camp welcomed girls from first through eighth grade for a day focused on developing basketball fundamentals while fostering a love for the game.

Throughout the camp, participants worked on skills including dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, rebounding and footwork before putting those abilities to the test in a series of competitions.

Edmonson County Lady Wildcats Head Coach, Daniel Caudill, said the camp serves a larger purpose than simply preparing players for future competition.

“Getting these girls invested at a young age where they’re comfortable around the program, I think builds those numbers and builds the strength of your program starting at an early age,” Caudill said. “It’s a great way to get the kids in this community invested. They get around our team, and when they come see us in December or January, these young girls can put a face to the players. They’ve already been coached by them, so it’s a great way to build that relationship with the community.”

Current Lady Wildcats players also played a key role throughout the day, serving as coaches and mentors for the younger athletes.

Senior, Shelby Sowders, said she enjoys helping the younger players and watching them grow.

“To me, I love it. I love getting to bond with little girls like this and just having fun,” Sowders said. “I feel like a lot of them look up to us, so it’s really fun getting to show them how we do things.”

Fellow senior, Addison Spainhoward, said seeing the campers enjoy the sport makes the experience rewarding.

“It’s so fun seeing them have a smile on their face while playing the game that we’ve all grown up to love,” Spainhoward said.

While this was the only girls basketball camp scheduled this summer at Edmonson County, school officials said additional athletic camps are planned in the coming weeks.
