(NBC News) — The climate crisis is taking center stage on the presidential campaign trail as wildfires rage across the west and the Gulf Coast braces for impact from another hurricane.

“Donald Trump’s climate denial may not have caused these fires and record floods and record hurricanes, but if he gets a second term, these hellish events will continue to become more common, more devastating, and more deadly,” Democratic nominee Joe Biden said Monday.

President Trump, meanwhile, was in California for a briefing on the wildfires.

After retweeting a climate change skeptic, the president blamed forest management for the deadly fires that have burned more than three million acres in California alone.

“Good strong forest management, which I’ve been talking about for three years, hopefully they’ll start doing that,” Mr. Trump said. “In the meantime, we’re helping them out a lot.”
