Cyber Security Prevention: Logan County High School student training

LOGAN COUNTY, Ky.- Logan County High School held student training to help protect children from online predators Thursday morning.

The presentation informed children about the dangers of posting inappropriate content on social media and what to do if an online predator approaches them. “We’re doing a student training. It’s part of an overall strategy for the school system that involves the students and the parents,” said Detective Mike Lemon, CEO of Cyber Safe School.

From basic posts like selfies to making a complaint on TikTok, Lemon warned that these forms of content could be used against you. He highlighted the rise of using AI and how this too could affect those with digital profiles.

“So, we really dive into how what they’re posting today will affect their future. It could be the job they want; it could be the school they want to go to or to keep the job that they have. But then we also go into how predators work,” he said.

Parents are urged to teach their children about child exploitation, especially if they have social media.

According to the FBI’s website, having preventative conversations with your kids who have social media can save their lives and prevent exploitation. Parents should educate themselves about the websites their children use.

  • Check their accounts and discuss what is appropriate to post
  • Restrict their online profile access
  • Encourage children not to speak to strangers online

“I think parents what they see on the screen is totally different than what they’re seeing,” Lemon said.

If you or anyone you know experiences exploitation online, call your local authorities and report it to the FBI.
